Seeing the Mediterranean Sea for the first time- Momoko’s goosebump moment
“Hi! My name is Momoko, and I live in Malta, a super sunny island located to the South of Sicily. Today I want to talk about my goosebump moment, and I got the biggest goosebumps of my life when I saw the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. It was on my first morning in Malta, it was around 7am and I woke up because the room was full of sunshine even so early in the morning, and I open the curtains, and oh my goodness! I will never forget that scene – it was the Maltese sea with the sunshine sparkling on it and colors like sapphire blue, emerald, green, and turquoise all blended together, and the waves were just crashing on the rocky beach. It was so beautiful, it felt like the time froze and I just stood there, the only sound I could hear was the sound of the waves. I will never forget the time when I got the biggest goosebumps of my life”.
The beauty of the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean Sea exhibits a beautiful deep blue color that gives more than one goosebumps. The inhabitants of the countries bathed by the Mediterranean feel beauty more intensely. The brilliant luminosity and the still waters of this sea that has witnessed history generate a fascination that every year attracts millions of people to its shores.
In this sea, a wide range of ecosystems is also recognized and, because it is warmer and saltier than the Atlantic, it supports several species that are not found in other seas or oceans, such as the Mediterranean monk seal, which is the only species of pinniped in such an area. Below sea level are seagrass beds, coral reefs, mountains, and trenches. In the basin, above sea level, there are conifers from the families Ceratonia, Cupressaceae and Brassicaceae, as well as olive trees and other plants capable of surviving in the rocky environment.
How was the Mediterranean formed?
The formation of the Mediterranean is the result of geological movements that have occurred over millions of years. It is currently located where the African and Eurasian plates meet; the friction between the two caused the appearance of several volcanoes and marble quarries long ago.
However, it is possible that it originated from other bodies of water: the Tethys Sea, or perhaps Neothetis. The Mediterranean Sea basin was previously believed to be a direct tectonic remnant of the Tethys Sea, which separated Gondwana from Laurasia during the Mesozoic and part of the Cretaceous.
In the Jurassic and late Cretaceous, the African and Eurasian plates gradually moved closer together, bringing what are now Africa, Arabia, and India to the top and closing off the Tethys Ocean. The Neothetis ocean basin was the result of the convergence between the African and Eurasian plates.
Malta, a wonder in the Mediterranean Sea
The small archipelago of Malta is made up of the islands of Malta, Comino and Gozo, it is located in the Mediterranean and is popular for being a place where you can enjoy a mild and pleasant climate together with the kindness and hospitality of its affable people.
Given the geographical location, the numbers of civilizations that have left their mark on these islands are several; among them we find the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Spaniards and the French and English Crusaders. The mixture of influences has made Malta a country rich in history, traditions and gastronomy.
The sun, the beaches, hotels and daily life complete this destination with interesting features for those who visit it. The city of Valletta with its narrow winding streets, is full of historic buildings and palaces, is surrounded by fortifications, building a true cultural heritage of the history of the country and the region.
