“Guys, my name is John, and I’m from Micronesia. My goosebump moment that I want to share with you is the World Cup final game between Argentina and France. If you guys watched that game, you know it was a goosebump moment from beginning to end. Very emotional and exciting, and it was great. I think it was, for me, the best final in a World Cup that I have ever seen in my life. Just remembering that last goal, in the penalty kick, OMG, it was a lot of anxiety, and when Argentina scored the last goal that gave them the victory, just remembering that screaming in the stadium: gooooaaaal!!!. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps”.

Argentina wins epic World Cup final against France on penalties

Argentina was crowned world champion after a thrilling final against France, which was decided from the penalty spot after a 3-3 draw in 120 minutes.

Lionel Messi scored twice, and Kylian Mbappe netted a hat-trick. Still, Emiliano Martinez’s save from Kingsley Coman’s penalty was decisive, along with Aurelien Tchouameni’s shot that was too long for the French, who had twice rallied after being out of the game.

Messi opened the scoring with a penalty in the 23rd minute after Ousmane Dembele pulled Di Maria’s heel back.

Di Maria doubled the lead in the 36th minute by finishing an excellent team goal from a perfect counterattack. After that, Argentina seemed to be in complete control, and France had not even been able to shoot until the 67th minute when Randal Kolo Muani headed wide.

Mbappe gave France a lifeline with a penalty in the 80th minute after Nicolas Otamendi fouled Kolo Muani. Minutes later, he leveled the scores with a powerful volley from a Coman pass. Mbappe nearly scored a third goal before the 90 minutes were up, but his shot was deflected wide, and the game went into extra time.

Messi put Argentina in front in the 108th minute with a close-range shot after Hugo Lloris had blocked a shot from Argentina substitute Lautaro Martinez. Still, Mbappe equalized again from the penalty area after Gonzalo Montiel’s arm blocked his shot.

Then Emiliano saved from Kolo Muani with virtually the last kick of the game to take the final to penalties.

Penalties and more penalties

With the one awarded in the final, Argentina obtained another record: that of the team awarded the most penalties in favor in a World Cup, with five. This surpassed the four awarded to the Netherlands in 1978 and Portugal in 1966.

However, neither the Netherlands nor Portugal won the final title, something that the Albiceleste did achieve. Furthermore, Argentina’s triumph in Qatar brings the trophy back to South America. This has yet to happen since Brazil won the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan.

Lionel Messi and his legendary mark

The Argentinian’s performance in Qatar was a spectacular one. He is 35 years old and poured out the last drops of his immeasurable talent in this World Cup; and also transformed magnificent displays into some records, such as the fact that he is the player who has played the most games in the World Cup: 26.

Thus, he surpassed Lothar Matthäus as the player with the highest number of matches in a World Cup. In addition, in Qatar, Messi became his team’s all-time top scorer in a World Cup: with the two goals he scored against France, he reached 13 goals and surpassed Gabriel Omar Batistuta, who had 10. He even caught a historic player such as Pelé, who scored 12.
