The tribes of Laos – Gail’s goosebump moment
“I am Gail and I come from Laos. My goosebump moment is during the pandemic. We know that during the pandemic everyone was staying home and during that time, I was looking for some interesting tasks to kill my time and what I found interesting at the moment was traveling to very remote places in Laos. I went to different provinces of Laos and also stayed in the villages to experience the culture and tradition. After my travel, I found it very cool, and my experience was satisfying. I realized that the people who were living in the village were very happy compared with the cities and they were very content. Even though the pandemic hit most people in the world, they lost their job, no money, no fun and leisure. The people in the village live normally and happily and they are not very affected with the pandemic because they know how to live in hardship and challenging moments every time. So, for me, I was so amazed and I learned that this was also a good lesson for us and this reminds us that we can live back like in old times and be happy and safe as the villagers”.

Going to Laos and visiting one of its traditional villages, getting into the life of one of its communities, learning about their customs and spending a few hours enjoying their company gives the traveler the chance to soak up the culture of this country.
The tribes in Laos are spread throughout the country, but there are a few localities that can serve as a base camp to visit the most important ones.
Routes in Laos to visit the tribes
Luang Prabang is not only a city of temples. Near this beautiful city are numerous tribal villages where you can participate in the production of handicrafts. Some examples are Ban Xang Khong, a village dedicated to the production of rice alcohol, or Bam Ma Pime and Ban Tha Pena, where ethnic minorities live.
Muansing is mainly known for its market of ethnic products from all corners of Laos. From here you can visit the region of Sieng KoK, near the border with Burma, where a large number of different ethnic groups live.
Luang Namtha, located in the north of the country, is the most ethnically diverse province in Laos. Bordering China and Burma, this region is home to 39 different minorities.
Paksé is one of the main cities in southern Laos. Its location makes it a perfect place to visit the Bolaven Plateau, home to several tribes, who live mainly from tea and coffee plantations.
Life in Laos
Laos is a mountainous, landlocked country located in Southeast Asia. Agriculture, mostly subsistence farming, is the predominant activity of its economy.
Most of the population lives in the valleys of the Mekong River and its tributaries, where rice can be grown on the fertile wetlands near the rivers. Shortly after its independence from France in 1953, the country began a turbulent period.
In 1975, the communist Pathet Lao movement came to power with the help of North Vietnam. Many Laotians fled the regime and the United States resettled some 250,000 refugees.
Laos is one of the few remaining communist countries and its economy faces difficulties due to poor roads, no railroads and limited access to electricity.
