The choices we make right now can make our future – Precious’s goosebump moment

(text video)

Precious: “I am from Nigeria. I am going to be talking about a goosebump moment from a movie titled “The Tomorrow War”, produced by Jules Daly. In the movie, a war was predicted to happen in 2050 and people were deployed to stop the war. The lead character, Chris Pratt playing Forester, was deployed for this war. Now, my goosebump moment came when he was having a conversation with his wife after he had gone to war, and was not able to stop it from happening because the lead character of the war died. When he realized “I could stop this war, and you know, prevent it from even happening by doing something right now to prevent the future occurrence.” Now this gave me a light bulb moment telling me that “Oh you can stop what happens in the future by what you do right now.” A lot of choices we make right now can make or mark our future.”

Our decisions matter

The results you have in your life today are the fruit of the decisions you have made in the past. If you are happy with the job you have, it will be because at some point you chose the career, the company, or the people you work with that would make you happy. If you are not happy, it might be because you made decisions that were not right for you. The good news is that the results you will have tomorrow depend on the decisions you make today.

That is the great power you always have: to decide to live the life you want to live on your own terms. It is the decisions you make, and not the circumstances you live in, that determine your destiny.

What does the movie “The Tomorrow War” teach us about making decisions?

The movie “The Tomorrow War” is a good example of those moments when we have to make some decisions that will define our future. The movie tells us that one day the world is paralyzed when a group of time travelers are transported from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Humanity is losing the world war against a deadly alien species.

The only hope for survival is for soldiers and citizens of the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) who, determined to save the world for his daughter, joins a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and her father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.

Thus, Dan Forester will be recruited to take part in that struggle and will have to collaborate with other characters, like the brilliant scientist and her estranged father as they try to save the planet.

One of the scenes that well represents the experience of making difficult decisions is when the main character has a conversation with his wife after going to war and when he realizes that he could stop the war and prevent it from happening in the future.

What decisions do we constantly make that determine our results?

When faced with an important decision in our lives, it is necessary to look at what we are focusing on, what meaning we are giving it and how we are labeling the challenge. If you want your results to change, you need a new angle to focus on, try to give it another meaning and look for words that help you find the solutions instead of focusing on the problem.

In our daily life there are decisions we constantly make that determine our results. These decisions are what we focus on, what meaning we give to things, and what label we put on circumstances.

What we focus on: The focus you give to any situation will be the first thing that will determine how you feel, and therefore how you act. When faced with a problem, if you focus on what you are afraid of instead of the opportunity or the solution, it will be easy to be affected to the point of not knowing what to decide. On the other hand, when you look at the problem and your mind automatically starts thinking of solutions, it will be much easier for you to decide to act.

What meaning we give to things: generally speaking, if you think it is the end of a relationship, it will be easy to feel bad, while if you think it is the beginning of a new stage in your life, it will be easier to feel good. According to how you feel, you will make some decisions or others. The decision you make in that moment will mark your future, so it is advisable to give it the most positive meaning you can find. When something goes wrong, try to find the learning and not the guilt or remorse, in this way progress will be much easier.

The label we put on circumstances: we are not conscious of the words we use to label circumstances, experiences, or people. However, words have very different connotations that make us live and feel the same situation in one way or another. For example, if you believe that to be successful you have to fight for the goals you set out to achieve, it will be much more tedious to achieve them than to a person who believes that to be successful you have to work hard; and in turn this person will feel something very different from someone who believes that to be successful you have to find passion.

It will always be better to make decisions

Do you remember a decision that has turned your life around? Making decisions allows us to move forward and while it may not always be easy, it helps us grow. Making a decision really changes our future.

It is important to keep in mind that fear of making mistakes does not stop us from making decisions. The fear of making mistakes is natural and is overcome to the extent that decisions are made constantly. Delegating decisions is a big mistake, because it causes paralysis in the evolution of the personality and dependence on the people around you. Those who do not make decisions become victims of circumstances and of the people who made the decision for them.
