Springtime: The seeds start growing – Liz’s goosebump moment

(text video)

Liz: “Hello! My name is Liz. I’m from Manchester in the UK but actually live in Italy. My most relevant GoosebumpMoment so far happens to me every year at this time. It has to do with spring, because I do a lot of gardening, so every year I plant a lot of seeds and what excites me every year is when those seeds pop their little heads out of the ground and you see them grow into plants. That moment where we can watch them grow after all that time is just magical and gives me Goosebumps. I usually see it quite a lot, but it’s one of the few things that make me feel that way in gardening. And it happens all the time, in fact, it’s happening right now. Well I have a bunch of little seedlings in my yard growing. And well, that’s my GoosebumpMoment”.

The magic of seeing a plant grow

Watching seeds grow into plants gives us great satisfaction because it allows us to see how, with our dedication, we obtain life-giving results. Plants can become the soul of our homes and taking care of them is a very effective therapy to relax our body and mind.

We can learn many things from plants. They are all beautiful and unique, just like people, and no matter how hard we push them, they will always grow at their own pace. Plants invite us to breathe more deeply, to spend time in the sun, to relax, to trust the processes of life, and they also encourage curiosity and patience. Nothing better than waiting in wonder for the result after planting a seed.

Taking care of the garden or plants raises your level of happiness

Several studies have revealed that people who garden are much happier. Taking care of plants not only promotes more intimate connections between individuals, but also gives more meaning to the lives of those who do it, especially if what is grown are fruits or vegetables. And it is not even an activity that must be done in company to obtain results, so it is ideal, especially in these times of social distancing.

Plants also purify the air, providing us with oxygen, eliminating toxins and cooling the environment. They are also a reminder of how delicate and ephemeral life can be, without forgetting their ability to make us feel that we are connecting with something more powerful, with the force of nature.

Benefits for mental and physical health

As if this were not enough, gardening is a great physical activity. Pulling weeds and planting consumes between 200 and 400 calories per hour, and removing soil, between 250 and 350, depending on the physical constitution of each person. In addition, it has long been known that spending time in a natural environment can help reduce the risk of depression, stress, and anxiety.

It also reduces the incidence of heart disease, osteoporosis, and helps keep the immune system fit. The ideal would be to be able to do it outside, but if we do not have that option, caring for a single plant inside is already beneficial.

Other benefits attributed to plants are that they reduce blood pressure, improve our reaction times, increase attention span, improve attendance levels (to school and work), increase productivity, improve overall well-being, improve job satisfaction and perception of space.

Spring, the time to dedicate yourself to gardening

Spring is the season which stands out for the availability of sunlight, an essential condition for the growth of fruit and vegetables such as squash, zucchini, cucumbers, watermelons, melons, tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, beans and corn. Similarly, other species such as basil, radicheta, arugula, chard, sweet potato and potato flourish.

On the other hand, during this period growth resumes, that is when the climate is favourable enough to allow them to produce new leaves, flowers and fruits. In addition, the sap circulates again at a more or less rapid rate through the vessels of the trunks and branches, so that, in the event of injuries, they will recover more easily.
