Practicing extreme rappelling – Francel’s goosebump moment
“Hi, I’m Francel! I come from Micronesia, and my goosebump moment was when I rappelled. This is descending a cliff or wall with a rope. Some friends invited my brother and me. My younger brother is super athletic, he does sports and all that, but I’m not. We hiked for a while until we came to a large stone wall. Climbing was not easy. You had to be coordinated and strong. But when you finally get to the top and look down, you really do get goosebumps. Do it at least once, you won’t regret it.”
Rappel, a sport for adventure lovers
We are all different: some people like quiet activities, and others like adventure. For the most courageous and daring, Rappel is one of the favorite options.
Its origin is attributed to Jean Esteril Charlet, a guide from Chamonix, France, who lived from 1840 to 1925. He created the basic technique of this sport, and since then, many methods have been developed.
Rappelling, a system of descending vertical surfaces, increased in popularity in the 1960s and by 1980 was at its peak.
Benefits of Rappelling
This sport can be a great pastime since it provides comprehensive contact with nature. Among the benefits obtained from practicing it, are that it helps you strengthen different body parts, burn fat while strengthening muscles, and acquire cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. Mentally, this training develops the ability to concentrate, improve confidence and self-esteem and learn to make decisions.
Rappel is also used as a method to reach difficult-to-reach points in the industry, such as maintenance of structures like bridges, and skyscrapers under construction, cleaning of glass buildings, welding, and others, as well as by hikers, mountaineers, rock climbers, spelunkers, canyoning and any activity that requires vertical descents.
Its practice is also known by the different rescue teams in the world that use rappelling to reach places where people who have suffered some accidents are found.
