Min: “Hello. I am from Myanmar. My goosebump moment was when I visited Gaw Yan Gyi Island three years ago. I visited there with a group of my friends. Gaw Yan Gyi Island is something you can call Bali of Myanmar, if you know Bali in Indonesia. The place has really a lot to offer. It has a lot of beautiful costal reefs, and it has a lot of stunning beaches, and the sunset there is really phenomenal, one of the most beautiful I have seen. The seafood there is really fresh and delicious as well. And we even had a small night camp on a hill that is overseeing the ocean as well. We really had a good time. Whenever I think about this trip, I still get a lot of chills and a lot of goosebumps. That is my story and thank you for watching.”
A paradise called Gaw Yan Gyi
Gaw Yan Gyi island is located near Nanthapu village, in the Ayeyarwaddy region of Myanmar. It is a really beautiful island and became a tourist destination due to its beautiful rock formation and reefs.
It is a quiet beach that can be considered as a small oasis, with a real beach atmosphere. Besides, Myawaddy Pagoda, located at the top of Gaw Yan Gyi Island, is the best viewpoint to see the sea and its surroundings. There are more than 400 steps to climb to the top.
The beauty of Gaw Yin Gyi
Gaw Yin Gyi Island, also known as Ngayokekaung, is less than seven hours from Yangon and is famous for its wild, uninhabited beaches that can seem as distant and unreachable as a foreign land.
The beauty of Gaw Yin Gyi can be appreciated at a super cheap price. If you have a tent, you can pitch it on the sand or a small hut can be rented in a beachfront coconut plantation. Those who like a solid roof over their head can opt for one of the half-dozen hotels or guesthouses, which vary in price.
The island’s residents welcome travellers because they recognise the beauty and tourism potential of the area. Undoubtedly, Gaw Yin Gyi is a largely undiscovered ocean paradise that gives more than a few of us goosebumps.
Rock formations and reefs in the Pathein district
Myanmar has an extensive coastline with over 2800 km stretching from the north to the south of the country. Generally, the coast is divided into three parts, the upper Rakhine coast, the middle Ayeyarwady coast and the lower Teninthayi coast. The middle Ayeyarwady region and, apart from it, the Rakhine and Teninthayi coast are well known for their wealth of coral reefs.
The Myeik archipelago consists of more than 800 islands and is also known for its beautiful coral reefs. According to the Marine Science study, more than 500 species of corals have been recorded in the Myeik Archipelago. Like many other countries, Myanmar’s coral reefs face the problem of degradation, especially from fishing and trade.
Tourism in Myanmar
Tourism in Myanmar is a developing sector. Although Myanmar has great tourism potential and attractions in many aspects, much of the industry is yet to be developed. The number of visitors to this country is small compared to its neighbors, even surpassed by Laos. This is mainly due to its political situation.
However, after the junta transferred power to the civilian government, the tourism sector experienced an increase in tourist arrivals and, in 2012, tourist arrivals surpassed the one million mark for the first time.
