Being on a plane for the first time – Scholastica’s goosebump moment

(text video)

“Hi! I am Scholastica Madundo from Tanzania and my goosebump moment was when I flew for the first time on an airplane as an adult. I was so thrilled to fly that I asked the man giving boarding passes to save me a window seat. When the plane started taking off, I could not stay still out of excitement. Yes, I started feeling dizzy, but I refused to shut my eyes and miss the glory of flying. When we got off the ground, I was bewildered by the possibility of defeating gravity and chilling side by side with the clouds. The magnificent scenery below me made my jaw drop”.

The thrill of flying in an airplane for the first time

Cold sweats, sleeplessness, butterflies in the stomach, rapid heartbeat and a great, great desire to scream… No, we are not talking about the symptoms of any disease, but the opposite: one of the most incredible sensations that can exist, that of flying in an airplane for the first time.

It is clear that nothing is comparable to the experience of traveling by plane for the first time. Although, we have to be honest: the nerves might accompany you for the rest of your life every time you set foot inside one of them and until it sets its wheels on the runway of the chosen destination. Undoubtedly, the thrill of the first plane ride is unique and gives more than one of us goosebumps.

What can you really experience on your first flight?

Surely, you will be worried about having an accident, but the key is precisely that this is not at all common. If you review statistics on road accident fatalities compared to air accidents, you will know that the former are much more likely and of a much higher incidence, so thinking rationally there is very little to fear about dying on a flight.

Analyzing even more the statistics of air accidents, you will find that only a minimal proportion of them occur in commercial flights of major airlines, since their maintenance and prevention controls follow more rigorous procedures that make it more difficult for any serious problem to occur while in the air.

It is important to know that the most complicated situations generally occur during takeoff or landing of the aircraft, so once you are in the air you can dedicate yourself completely to enjoying the scenery, especially if you have decided to travel in a window.

Although, this may not be very advisable the first time, since in the landing maneuvers or after takeoff it is possible that the plane leans heavily to one side looking to take the direction of flight. If this happens in the direction you are sitting, it could cause some fear and even vertigo. For this reason, it would be convenient that on that first occasion you choose one of the central seats, where this is almost imperceptible.

Air bags sometimes generate a lot of movement inside the airplane, but in almost one hundred percent of the cases they do not cause any problem, besides pilots usually adjust the speed to a slower one when the force of the air is greater, thus reducing vibration to a minimum. If you prefer, it may help you to imagine in those moments that you are riding in a car on an uneven road.

Although it is also highly unlikely, you should know that if any aircraft malfunction occurs, including engine failure, pilots know what to do to get to an airport safely. Knowing many of the potential discomforts will make you feel safer and you will be able to recognize the cause when it happens, thereby lessening the surprise effect that would make you feel uncomfortable.

Preparations for flight

It is clear that a trip does not start when you get on the plane. The adventure starts from the moment you click on the buy ticket button on your flight search engine. From then on, everything will be a succession of emotions that will lead you to enjoy every second while you research about your destination, decide which places you want to visit and gather information to prepare an unforgettable trip.

The days before traveling by plane for the first time will probably be characterized by that tingling feeling that will take over your stomach. Don’t worry and enjoy them: it is a wonderful and logical sensation for those who are about to live a totally unknown experience.

Something that will help you calm your nerves and make sure everything is under control is to make a list of everything you want to bring as luggage. When you pack your suitcase, remember to cross off each of the items on the list as you include them: this is the only way to make sure you don’t forget anything important.

Start with clothing, continue with everything related to hygiene and finish with electronic items and other details such as guides or documentation.
