Mustika: ““Hello, I am Mustika. I want to share with you guys my goosbump moment. I had this goosebump moment when I watched a video of a seven-year-old girl, Angelina Jordan, sing a song by Billie Holiday: “Gloomy Sunday”. She sang that song at her Norway’s Got Talent audition. Let me tell you, it was fantastic. The voice, she managed to deliver the voice. She sang so beautifully, so melodiously. Because you know, it’s not easy to sing a jazz song, but she successfully did it. Even in the audience, some of them cried. And I admit I had goosebumps and I was tearing up because the voice was so beautiful. It was like she was putting everything into it, her emotions, her feelings into that song. It’s not an easy song because it’s a sad song, “Gloomy Sunday”. But she did it very, very good. I advise you to watch the video too. That’s my goosebump moment. Thank you.”

“Gloomy Sunday”

The song “Gloomy Sunday” was composed in 1933 by Hungarian pianist Rezsó Seress. The original lyrics were titled “Vége a világnak” (The world is ending) and were about despair caused by war, ending in a prayer about people’s sins. Poet László Jávor write his own lyrics to the song, titled “Szomorú vasárnap” (Sad Sunday), in which the protagonist wants to commit suicide following his lover’s death. These lyrics ended up becoming more popular than the original. The song was first recorded in Hungarian by Pál Kalmár in 1935.

“Gloomy Sunday” was first recorded in English by Hal Kemp in 1936, with lyrics by Sam M. Lewis, and was recorded the same year by Paul Robeson, with lyrics by Desmond Carter the same year. It became well-known throughout the English-speaking world after the release of a version by jazz singer Billie Holiday in 1941.
