The song ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem – Esteban’s goosebump moment
“Hi, my name is Esteban, I am from Tasmania, and my goosebump moment was from the song ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem. So I believe I first heard this song when I was about eleven years old. I think it was shown to me by one of my friends from school, and I really liked it mainly because of the message of the song. I also liked the beat, but just the message in general, it’s about how you can overcome, and you can do basically anything you set your mind to, and I just love the message. It’s something that even up to now, that I’m 23 years old, it’s something that really resonates with me. There are a lot of problems in my life, there are a lot of things that I want to achieve, and whenever I hear that song, I feel like I am able to do anything. It’s also a song based on a movie, and the movie also goes along the lines of the theme of the song, and I think they just go really well in hand, and I really love that song.”
‘Lose Yourself’, a hip hop reference
If you are a hip hop and rap music lover, you must have Eminem in one of your favorite playlists. In this sense, the song “Lose Yourself” is a reference of hip hop and of this singer since it brought him to fame.
It is about the same story as the movie 8 Mile, for which it was written and in which Eminem starred. The main message of the song is that opportunities come once in a lifetime, and we should take advantage of them despite all obstacles.
Actually, the movie and the song are based on Eminem’s life and how he had to overcome many obstacles to succeed in the music industry with rap and hip hop as flags. It is worth noting that the movie won an Oscar for Best Song.
The lyrics of this song have a raw and sarcastic content just like the rest of Eminem’s songs. It has a very hip hop beat with rock fusions. Naturally, some words in the lyrics were censored, but it kept its essence.
Hit songs
‘Lose Yourself’ was ranked among Rolling Stones magazine’s Top 500 songs and the album to which it belongs won the Grammy Award in 2003 for Best Rap Album. It obtained 4 platinum albums, being Eminem’s most successful single.
It still occupies the first place as the most listened rap song in history and according to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the single of this musical genre that was in first place on the most famous musical lists in the world for the most amount of time.
Eminem’s musical legacy
Eminem has an unconventional mind. He lived and grew up in conditions of poverty, tied to a place forgotten by the world (Detroit, Michigan), suffered from racism and discrimination, was a victim of domestic violence, his mother was a drug addict and his life seemed to have no glimmer of light. However, today he is considered one of the best lyricists of his generation (with a vocabulary larger than Bob Dylan’s) and is seen as an example to follow for all young people who feel alone and helpless in the world.
He changed the rap world by creating his own style, rhyming without regard to meter and impacting the world with political, social and cultural songs. He was the victim of several lawsuits accusing him of perverting the youth and he responded with criticism claiming that parents don’t care about their children and that not paying attention to their feelings is worse than them listening to rap music. He has an undeniable legacy. His apprentices and new generations consider him an example and his violent imagination has earned him a place as one of the most relevant performers in history.
